One of my many near death experiances

Before I came to Defiance College I attended school at Heidelberg University. There, I threw for the track and field team. I threw everything but i excelled at javelin. Our throwing coach threw javelin when he was in college and i was the only male throwing the javelin so he focused a lot on me. About half way though the year he decided to recruit another javelin thrower. He was a sprinter which really helps in the event however I don't think that he has ever thrown anything in his life before so he needed a lot of work. So one day we working on our approach (the running part before you throw) I was on one side of the field by my self and our coach and the recruit were on the other side. We each had had a Javelin in hand I was dunning about 50 yards towards the center of the football field and then back. The other guy was doing the same thing on the other side but he was only doing about 30 yards. Our coach then decided to make him go the whole the whole 50 yards but no one informed me of this. So we both are approaching the center of the field without the other person knowing it because we were looking to the side of of the field. We approached the center at the same time and I looked to my left to see where I was. What I saw was the other guy's javelin was inches away from my neck. He had too much momentum to stop and while I did realize what was happening, I didn't have enough time to react to it. However I just happened to roll my ankle at the same time on accident. me rolling my ankle made me "very gracefully" fall allowing be to matrix style dodge the near death experience by complete accident.

Notorious Blogging Assignment

Group #4 – Technology/Science of and in Hitchcock’s Films
Use of uranium in the movie

In the movie Notorious, the main motive of Devlin and Alicia is to investigate the Germans and their suspected use of uranium. Uranium is a radioactive that can be used for energy or weaponry because of its radioactivity. Radioactivity can be defined in terms of the atom, which is the smallest part of an element that can exist. Some atoms are unstable and break down into new atoms. When this happens, it gives off energy, referred to as radioactivity. A radioactive element emits energy in the form of waves or particles. As for Uranium, it  primarily emits alpha particles which are the biggest and most destructive type up until a point. While alpha particles are big and bad they can only penetrate so far because of their size. They can be typically blocked by a piece of paper and at worst external exposure can give you a bad burn because it can not penetrate farther than your skin. However in the movie, Alicia ingests the uranium which is a huge problem. Inside the body alpha particles can do tremendous damage to the body and all the organs. Within the first hours  of exposure you can experience headache, fever, diarrhea, nausea and, vomiting and within the week Weakness, fatigue dizziness and disorientation. All of these are symptoms that Alicia experienced.

One form of technology that Alfred Hitchcock used was different camera angles. In many of his movies Hitchcock would focus on the character’s eyes to create suspense. Eyes are a great way of relaying emotional messages. Hitchcock portrays many different character emotions by showing what they are looking at, or by actually showing an image of their eyes. One scene in Notorious that focused on the characters eyes was when Alicia realized that she was being poisoned by the tea. The characters do not come right out and say, you poisoned me, but instead Hitchcock shows Alicia’s eyes. The audience can see the fear in her eyes, as the camera moves from her eyes to the mother and then her husband. Also during this entire scene in the right hand corner was an enlarged tea cup. This also helps to create the suspense in Notorious.

The use of the camera in Notorious helped let the audience and viewers know something was important. In the movie Hitchcock would focus in on objects as well as characters. He would start the scene high and wide, then ending it low and close In one of the scenes Hitchcock zoomed in on the cup of tea Alicia was drinking which had something in it which made her very ill. Hitchcock uses this technique very well.
Use of rear projection process shots:
While we see plenty of outdoor scenes in Notorious such as the drunk driving scene at the beginning, the scene of the plane flying into Brazil and the scene where they are watching the horse race, none of those scenes were actually shot outside. In fact, the only scene that was shot outside was the scene where Develin and Alicia ride the horses next to Sebastian. Hitchcock instead used rear projection process shots (prerecorded backgrounds) to achieve the appearance of being outdoors. Hitchcock preferred filming indoors because it gave him maximum control over filming throughout the day. In other words, he could film a day time “outside” scene late in the evening and it still appear to be early morning.
Drunk driving scene that was actually filmed indoors.

How Hitchcock physically uses the camera

One form of technology that is often overlooked in films is the physical positioning of the camera.  Before the time of green screens getting a shot with the background that the director wanted was much harder.  At times the director would have to take multiple takes from multiple angles in order to complete a scene.  One example of this is the shower scene from the movie Psycho (1960).  In this scene, first link below, multiple camera angles are used to create an overall sense for the action that takes place throughout the scene.  Because of the size of the set multiple takes of the scene had to be conducted in order to collect enough film for the scene.  In the picture below the shower wall was removed to allow for the point of view shots that are spread throughout the scene.  Another example of this is in the movie Notorious (1946).  In an early scene the viewer sees Ingrid Bergman waking up with a hangover.  As Cary Grant approaches the camera rotates as if you are viewing him from the point of view of Ingrid Bergman.  This scene, second link below, was filmed in two segments.  The first consisted of all the shots of Ingrid Bergman in the bed.  In the second the bed was moved and a camera was placed in its place to give the audience the correct angle.

My hobby

I have multiple hobbies that are that are normal. I like to play video games, watch tv, hang out with friends, and even swim to keep in shape, but I do have a hobby that is pretty unique. I brew my own hard ciders and meeds which is a lot of fun. I don't like the taste of beer so when I do drink its stuff like Mike's or Red's or something along those lines. The problem with that is that they are super expensive compared to other options. It got to the point where i decided to just try to make my own because it was was cheaper. so i bought a kit, made a couple of batches. I have made a basic hard apple cider, a black cherry cider, and honey meed. I haven't tried any of them because the longer you wait to drink them the better tasting and stronger it is so I am waiting until this summer to try it. If it is good I will try making bigger batches and 100% from scratch getting the apples from an orchard and pressing them my self. I might even try my hand at wine if I am courageous enough.

Why I think Bernie Sanders is our best option

I want to say that this is not a statement on his policies or what he plans to do if he does win because not every one agrees with them whether you are a republican or democrat ,  just a simple analysis on who he is and how he is running for president. The four topics that make me think this are his past actions, who he is focusing on for his political statements, how he is paying for his campaign and his stance on war (which is kind of a political opinion). Back in the 60's he was an active member of the civil rights movement he was "preaching" to his fellow college students about equal rights. This tells me that he actually backs up his statements and beliefs with actions and just doesn't say things to win popularity or votes. Next, his focus is the majority of the U.S. population or the upper middle class and below. This tells me that he has most of America as a population worried for. He also has a way with the youth despite being older than dirt.  The third thing to mention and his biggest feature as a candidate is that he stands against PACs (Political Action Committee) or any big companies supporting candidates. Sanders is even running his campaign though his own pocket and financial support from his citizen supporters and no company. He does this because the person who wins the presidency should be some one that earns it and deserves it, not someone that had it payed for. This also keeps companies out of the influences of our political issues. His last issue is his stance on war. On pretty much every issue involving the current wars he has opposed them. However he has supported veteran and veteran support programs stating that if you are not prepared top take care of the men and women who put their lives on the line to defend this country – who came back wounded in body, wounded in spirit – if you’re not prepared to help those people, then don’t send them to war in the first place.

The new puppy and our summer plans

Last Sunday My family and I got a new puppy. She is a beautiful black lab named Missy Willow or just Willow for short. We struggled at first with her name because everyone had a different name in mind. My dad wanted to give her a Christmas themed name like Holy because she was born on Christmas Eve. However no one else liked that name. After much debating we decided on Willow.

Some background information on our family and the decision to get willow is that our family, and two of my dad's sister and their family share a small lake cottage in Michigan. We shared this property for 20 years. Our group had an unspoken agreement of no big dogs there because there would not be a lot of room for them. All three families had small dogs to medium sized dogs so there were no issues. But over the course of 20 years all of those dogs passed away due to age or heath issues. My aunts first replacement dog was a toy labradoodle so it didn't break our unofficial size rule. Then my cousin from the other sisters family bought himself a chocolate lab which did break the size rule. He was well behaved for the most part so we let if slide and he became a part of the family.

Now because of the breaking of that rule we gave up on the no big dogs rule so the family that got the first lab is getting a second lab, a silver one. My sister and I wanted one too so we tried to convince our parents to get the silver lab's sister. They were not too thrilled about it because of how much they cost and all the vet bills. Eventually they came around though but by the time they did all of the silver labs were gone. We looked at the same breeders other labs and all that was left was a charcoal lab or a black lab. We went there to se which one we like better and immediately bonded with Willow and how we got here today. So now we are house breaking her, training her and all this other stuff so that she will be ready to go to the lake this summer
